Course Description:
One of the five pillars of teaching children to read is phonological awareness. The underlying foundation for all reading development starts with an understanding of and the ability to manipulate our language's sounds.

Phonological awareness skills are held as the strongest predictor of success in learning to read. Regardless of age, students with a weakness in phonological awareness will fall behind, experiencing poor spelling, inaccurate decoding of new words, mispronunciation of words and difficulty remembering or recalling new words. Pre-readers, and beginning and struggling readers and spellers of all ages require purposeful, guided, sequential instruction in foundational phonological awareness skills in order to make strong print connections tied to skilled reading and spelling.

The Self-Paced Phonological Awareness Workshop covers the content in an interactive and flexible format. The information is easy to engage with through built-in interactions and activities. Participants have 30 days to complete the workshop.

Participants Learn:
• Phonological Awareness and Phonemic Awareness
• Phonological awareness-literacy connections
• Current research: when to teach; who to teach; when it should be mastered
• Phonological awareness continuum of progressing skill levels
• Signs of phonological awareness weakness and assessments
• Targeted, purposeful activities at all levels of phonological awareness for K-12 students
