Phonological Awareness: Essential Skills for All Readers Workshop - Livestream

Prerequisite: None
Workshop Hours: 4

Appropriate Audience:
Kindergarten – 2nd grade: General Education
Kindergarten – 12th grade: Special Education, Intervention, Resource

Course Description:
One of the five pillars of teaching children to read is phonological awareness. The underlying foundation for all reading development starts with an awareness of and the ability to manipulate the sounds of our language.

Phonological awareness skills are held as the strongest predictor of success in learning to read. Regardless of age, students with a weakness in phonological awareness will fall behind, experiencing poor spelling, inaccurate decoding of new words, mispronunciation of words and difficulty remembering or recalling new words. Pre-readers, and beginning and struggling readers and spellers of all ages require purposeful, guided, sequential instruction in foundational phonological awareness skills in order to make strong print connections tied to skilled reading and spelling.

A Brainspring Instructor teaches this workshop live in real time via Zoom (access and use details are provided upon registration). Participants log in on the workshop date and time to participate. Workshop allows for interaction with the Instructor and other course participants in order to retain the hands-on learning approach. Course sessions also include group discussions and question and answer opportunities.
