THE HISTORY AND STRUCTURE OF WRITTEN ENGLISH: An Overview
Dr. Marcia Henry brings over 50 years of experience working in the field of language acquisition and specific language disabilities (dyslexia) as a diagnostician, tutor, teacher, and professor. She is a fellow in the Orton-Gillingham Academy, and received the Margaret Byrd Rawson Lifetime Achievement Award from IDA in 2000.
Her webinar entitled The History And Structure Of Written English: An Overview discusses the historical perspective of the English language and its primary importance to studying word formation. An understanding of the forces that influence written English, along with a grasp of the structure of the English spelling system, provides teachers and their students with a logical basis for the study of English. Marcia illustrates how students who recognize letter-sound correspondences, syllable patterns, and morpheme patterns in words of Anglo-Saxon, Latin, and Greek origin have the strategies necessary to read and spell.
