  This class complements instructional practices learned in Phonics First Level I or Structures Level I, with an in-depth focus on the science of teaching reading to all students. This research and knowledge enhances a teachers’ ability to meet the needs of all students. The class emphasizes how the brain learns to read through both decoding skills and language comprehension. Teachers leave with a deeper understanding of how to implement effective teaching methods for teaching decoding, language comprehension and reading comprehension.

  Participants leave the class with the ability to immediately apply their new knowledge through lesson-plan templates for teaching reading in line with the Arkansas Science of Reading requirements.   Brainspring’s Pre-Kindergarten workshop introduces Orton-Gillingham principles of instruction to Pre-K teachers.   Syllabication instruction teaches struggling readers strategies to decode multisyllable words quickly and accurately. Students learn to systematically break a multisyllabic word into small, manageable syllables, identify the vowel sounds within each syllable and read the word.   This overview workshop introduces the study of prefixes, suffixes and Greek and Latin root morphology which provides a sophisticated method of teaching decoding and encoding to middle and high school struggling readers.   Approximately 65% of all reading at the middle school level and above comes from the Greek and Latin layers of language.
