Level II Orton-Gillingham Training
Completion of either:

  • Phonics First® Level I or
  • Structures Level I
  • 3+ months teaching Phonics First® and/or Structures to students
Course Hours: 30
Kindergarten through 12th Grade general education, special education, intervention, and resource teachers who have taken EITHER Phonics First® Level I or Structures Level I

This rigorous Orton-Gillingham training course emphasizes instruction of struggling readers at all grade levels and is critical for teachers working with students of all ages and skill levels. However, it is critical for teachers working with students of all ages and skill levels who have dyslexia or a learning disability.

Level II is a required step for those pursuing Brainspring’s nationally recognized certification.

Participants gain expertise in:
• Instruction of skills taught in Level I (Phonics First® or Structures)
• Customizing lessons for dyslexic and learning or language disabled students
• Advanced concepts of decoding and encoding

Participants Learn to Customize Instruction in:
• Phonological Awareness
• Basic phonics through advanced morphology
• Syllabication/multisyllable word attack strategies
• Fluency-building
• Vocabulary
• The Reciprocal Teaching process
• Multisensory comprehension
• Multisensory syntax (grammar)

Additional benefits:
• Emphasis on modifying lesson components to instruct individuals and small groups of students with similar skill needs

• Opportunities for hands-on lesson practice with other participants
• Emphasis on teaching reading to struggling, dyslexic and learning disabled students at all grade levels using Orton-Gillingham methodology
• Complimentary Brainspring Members Area Access: reproducible lesson resources and activities

Upon completion, participants will:>
• Receive a document of completion
• Be prepared with additional multisensory, direct instruction strategies beyond Phonics First® and Structures® content to also teach phonological awareness, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and syntax to students Tier II and III students in kindergarten through 12th grade
•Be eligible to apply to our supervised practicum, the final step in Brainspring’s nationally recognized Orton-Gillingham Dyslexia Specialist Certification program
• Be eligible to purchase 2 Graduate Credits (Ashland University)
