Silent E with Suffixes- Multisensory Monday
Posted by Brainspring on 22nd Feb 2016
Hi everyone,
Welcome to Multisensory Monday Sarah’s Spelling Rule. Today we go over the 2nd of the Three Great Spelling Rules: Silent E plus a Suffix.
(In case you missed it, Spelling School will be back in 2 weeks.)
Silent E Plus a Suffix
When adding a suffix beginning with a vowel to a base word ending in silent e, hide the e.
Don’t “drop” the e: you must “hide” the e.
The e doesn’t completely go away because the word is still read as if the e is there. The e is just hidden by the beginning vowel of the suffix.
shine+ing= shining
nice+est= nicest
rude+er= ruder
