A Multisensory Approach to Teaching Phonics and Word Analysis
Patterns for Success in Reading and Spelling is ideal for teachers, tutors, and others who work with students with reading problems. Students of all ages benefit from lessons that range from beginning phonics to advanced vocabulary. As required by the Reading First Program established under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 this program teaches phonics, vocabulary development, comprehension skills and fluency. There are three parts to this program:
Part 1: Letter-Sound Correspondences
Part 2: Syllable Patterns, Affixes, and Additional Phonics
Part 3: Morpheme Patterns
The teacher's manual includes complete lesson plans effective for either group or individual instruction. Lessons provide a card drill, review of a previously taught concept, presentation of a new concept, reading word list, spelling word list, phrases for dictation and an extension activity.
Visual and auditory drills with the Student Card Pack promote fluent and accurate decoding and spelling. The complete kit contains almost four hundred color-coded cards representing all phonics concepts taught in the lessons as well as 100 nonphonetic words. The phonogram cards have a key word on the back. Morpheme cards provide both key words and definitions.
Using the Student Word Lists books students read words, phrases, and sentences in order to develop vocabulary, comprehension skills, and fluency. Each book corresponds to the lessons found in Part 1, Part 2, or Part 3 of the Teacher's Manual.
The Student Activities Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 furnish additional practice activities to reinforce spelling, comprehension skills, and vocabulary development. These reproducible books include an answer key.
