Multisensory Monday: Two-Syllable Word Builders

Multisensory Monday: Two-Syllable Word Builders

Posted by Tammi Brandon on 6th Aug 2018

Today’s Multisensory Monday activity allows students to practice building and reading two-syllable words using craft sticks! This activity is inexpensive, durable, easy-to-store, fun-to-use, and above all, extremely effective for teaching two-syllable words!

Make it Multisensory …

To begin, gather the following materials:

  • Craft sticks
  • 2 different colored permanent markers
  • Two-Syllable Word List (include blends for an extra challenge!)

Next, select 5-6 words from the word list. Choose a craft stick and write “Start” on the left side of it. Write the first syllable of each word in one color on the right side of the craft sticks and the second syllable of each word in a different color on different craft sticks. Fill in the final spot with “Stop”.

*Words connect as shown.

To play, turn all the craft sticks face-down, except for the stick that says “start”. A student selects a craft stick from the face-down sticks and tries to create a word. If a real word is created, the student reads the word, selects another craft stick and consequently tries to build another word.

If a nonsense word is created, the student reads the word aloud, and the stick is placed back into the pile with the other face-down sticks. Play continues and the student continues drawing craft sticks, trying to build onto the word chain.

This activity is wonderful for one-on-one instruction, small groups, or whole-class. For small groups, students take turns drawing from the face-down craft sticks attempting to build real words. For whole class use, students work in groups and the teacher can use several different sets of words to create a variety of games. SImply rotate each word set among groups.

Enjoy!
