Multisensory Monday: “Click, Clack Moo” with Diphthong OW

Multisensory Monday: “Click, Clack Moo” with Diphthong OW

Posted by Loraine Hodgson on 15th Jul 2018

A Diphthong is a unique sound that typically requires lots of practice and repetition to master. In this Multisensory Monday activity, students discover the diphthong ow (as in cow) by listening to a fun children’s book that includes lots of repetition of the /ow/ sound. Kids especially enjoy the dialogue between the farm animals in this story, and won’t even notice this activity is work!

Make it Multisensory…

Read the attached story (below) to your students, one sentence at a time. Stop at the end of a sentence, and ask if any ow words were heard. Students will then select potential words heard from their ow word stack (attached below) and put them in a milk “pail” or envelope.  Finally, if no ow sound is heard, move on to reading the next sentence out loud and try again. This activity can furthermore be used as a vowel intensive activity, to help distinguish between diphthongs ow (as in cow) and ou (same sound, different spelling).

Click, Clack Moo, Cows that Type, by Doreen Cronin

“Farmer Brown has a problem.” (teacher stops reading, students repeat any ow words that were heard and then find their cards and put in their pail/envelope. Repeat these steps with the rest of the story).

“His cows like to type. All day long he hears…

CLICK, CLACK, MOO.

CLICK, CLACK, MOO.

CLICKETY, CLACK, MOO.

At first, he couldn’t believe his ears. Cows that type? Impossible!” …

Enjoy!
