C is soft before e, i and y; it makes the /s/ sound.

cider, circle, circus

bicycle, fancy, spicy

Use the mnemonic: Center City had a Cyclone.

Soft G

G is also soft before e, i and y; it makes the /j/ sound.

germ, large, age

giant, giraffe, digit

Egypt, energy, gymnastic

Use the mnemonic: Gentle Ginger went to the Gym.
