Multisensory Monday: St. Patrick’s Sensory Bag

Posted by Brainspring on 7th Mar 2021

In the early grades, children learn to sound out words listening for individual sounds. As they get older, they learn that two or three letters together can make one sound. These blends can come at the beginning or end of a word. Learning how multiple letters combine to create a sound will help students decode words better and read more smoothly. Children that can manipulate sounds and break them apart read much better than children that cannot.

A fun way to practice them is writing them using this fun St. Patrick-themed sensory bag.

Materials:

  • Ziplock Sandwich bag
  • Clear Hair Gel
  • Green Food Coloring
  • Gold Glitter
  • Clear Packing Tape
  • Blend Cards

How to Make the Bag:

Put a squirt of the hair gel, a few drops of green food coloring, and glitter in the sandwich bag. Close the bag up and tape it shut with clear packing tape. Mix the ingredients together, and it’s ready to be played with!

Make It Multisensory!

Cut out the attached cards and place them facing down. The child chooses a card, reads the blend, writes it out on the sensory bag, and sets the card in the discard pile.
