Multisensory Monday: Tic-Tac-DOUGH Game

Students of all ages love games! Here is a quick game you can play to teach or reinforce the short E sound heard in EA words such as “bread”. Alternately, you could use this activity when teaching single consonant J.

Materials Needed

Use brown construction to cut out dollops of “peanut butter” and red or purple construction paper to cut out globs of strawberry or grape “jelly”. Use a large sheet of construction paper or a file folder and create a tic-tac-toe game grid big enough for the construction paper cutouts to fit in to. Then, draw a “bread” shape around the game board to help reinforce the EA sound in the word “bread”.

Make it Multisensory

As with regular tic-tac-toe, players take turns claiming space on the game board.

For this Tic-Tac-DOUGH game, students must complete a task before claiming their space. Depending on student ability level, select one of the following tasks:

Write EA while saying the letter names and sound in a tactile sand tray
Read an EA word from your list of dictation words (word cards pre-made by the teacher could also be used)
Spell or write an EA word from your list of dictation words (word cards pre-made by the teacher could also be used)
Read a dictation sentence containing the dictation words above (pre-made cards could also be used)
Write a dictation sentence from those listed in the Dictation Sentences section of the Phonics First Curriculum Guide
