Multisensory Monday: Wake Up Your Neighbor!

Posted by Marguerite Foshee on 3rd Nov 2019

I love this activity! The kids get to move, think, and play. I used this activity when teaching -ng (-ing,-ang, -ong, -ung) and -nk (-ink, -ank, -onk, -unk) concepts. However, it can be adapted to most multisensory lessons.

Materials Needed

  • 3 x 5 cards
  • Tape
  • Playground ball
  • Dictation/spelling categories

Make It Multisensory

For this activity, sort your words by a specific category such as word families, parts of speech, etc. For me, this was easy: -nk breaks into -ink, -ank, -onk, -unk. Write each category on a 3 x 5 card, then tape the cards to a wall about six to 12 inches apart. I have a wonderful blank wall in my office that worked beautifully. Once you’re set-up, read the dictation words aloud, have the student identify the category verbally, then bounce the ball off the word category on the wall. For example, I say, “sing”, then my student says, “-ing”, and bounces the ball off the -ing card on the wall. Once your student has successfully completed the activity, leave the cards up for the next few lessons and use it in your intensive or as an end of lesson game.

Note: This activity isn’t crazy loud, but I do use the wall of my room that faces the
outdoors to save my teacher neighbors nerves.
