Multisensory Monday: Finding Meaning in a Millipede

Multisensory Monday: Finding Meaning in a Millipede

Posted by Tammi Brandon on 23rd Jan 2019

If you are working on strengthening your students understanding of morphemes, which are the smallest units of meaning in our language, here is an example of a simple, yet effective, multisensory activity. This activity focuses on the roots Milli (thousand), Ped/Pod/Pede (foot), and Sphere (round/circle).

Make it Multisensory

To help students remember the meaning of each root, students can quickly cut out different colored circles (sphere) from construction paper and glue them on to a larger paper to form the body of a millipede. Next, students cut out several foot shapes and glue those below the circles.

Students then write “sphere” on the round shapes and “ped” on the feet. Add some antennae and a face to complete the look.

Even older students seem to enjoy this simple, memorable craft!

Enjoy!
